This site will offer information pertaining to the general well being of all students.  There are a range of services required by New York State Education Department promoting optional health benefits to help ensure academic success. School Physicals and Screenings

NEW YORK STATE REQUIREMENTS FOR SCHOOL PHYSICALS AND SCREENINGS

The district’s School Health Program supports your students academic success by promoting health in the school setting.  One way that we provide care for your student is by performing the health screenings as mandated by New York State.

 

During the school year, the following screenings will be required to be completed by your physician or completed at school

 

VISION

  • Near and distant acuity for all newly entering students and students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 11.
  • In addition to the above, color perception and hyperopia screenings for all newly entering students.

 

HEARING

  • Hearing screenings for all newly entering students and students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 11.

 

SCOLIOSIS

  • Scoliosis (spinal curvature) screening for girls grades 5 and 7, and boys grade 9.

 

PHYSICAL AND DENTAL EXAMS

  • A physical examination, including Body Mass Index(BMI) and Weight Status Category information is required for all newly entering students and students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11.
  • A dental exam is requested, though not required, for all newly entering students and students in Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11.

 

A letter will be sent home if there are any findings on the screenings done at school that would cause concern or need medical follow up. Please call the school’s Health Office if you have any questions or concerns.

Attendance

We believe that daily attendance is critical to success in school. It serves to foster responsible work habits that will apply to other school and work situations in later life. It is our belief that we can only achieve excellence in academics and maximize the learning process when the students are in school.

 The only legal/excused reasons for absences, as recognized by the BOE are as follows:

  1. Sickness or death in family,
  2. Religious observance or instruction (pursuant to Policy 5182),
  3. Approved school-sponsored trips,
  4. Quarantine,
  5. Required court appearances,
  6. Military obligations,
  7. Approved cooperative/work study programs,
  8. Dental/medical appointments that cannot be scheduled after school or weekends, and illness for which medical documentation may be required
  9. Impassable roads or weather making travel unsafe,
  10. Junior or senior visits to colleges with parent and counselor approval, not exceeding four days.
  11. such other reasons as may be approved by the appropriate building administrator.

Any other reasons given for absences from school will be considered an illegal absence.

 

REPORTING ABSENCES, LATE ARRIVALS AND EARLY DISMISSALS

Please report your child’s absence, late arrival and early dismissal by emailing the appropriate school. The email serves as the parent note.

Please be advised that unless an email is received by 8:30 am,  you will receive an automated phone call reporting your student’s absence.

 

When Is My Child Sick Enough To Stay Home From School?

A child who is sick will not be able to perform well in school and is likely to spread the illness to other students and staff.

Our school policy states that you should not send your child to school if they have any of the following:

     -fever of 100.0 or above in the past 24 hours (May return to school when fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication.)

     -vomiting and/or diarrhea in the past 24 hours (May return to school when vomiting/diarrhea free for 24 hours without medication.)

     -chills

     -sore throat  *if diagnosed with strep throat, child must be on an antibiotic for 24 hours prior to returning to school

      -bad cold/flu symptoms including a runny nose, persistent coughing, body aches, headache

     

Please be sure your emergency contact numbers are updated in the event that your child becomes ill at school and needs to be picked up.
