Athletic Updates

COVID Task Force NYSPHAA Meeting.pdf  (Updated information 8/26/2020)

Update Aug. 20, 2020

The latest update from the Governor's office has indicated that guidance for interscholastic athletics will be released next week. We will continue to keep you informed and updated as more information becomes available.

Fall sport registration on Family ID is currently postponed until districts have a clearer understanding of the status of fall sport and what this entails. At this time, we do not have permission from Governor Cuomo to organize off season workouts or sports. NYSPHAA, directors, coaches and athletic trainers will continue to advocate on behalf of our schools and student athletes. We are hopeful that a decision will be made soon.

Fall sports delay

An update for interscholastic athletics in New York State, Section One Athletics and the Pawling Central School District.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association has delayed the start date for fall sports until Monday, Sept. 21.  In addition, NYSPHSAA will be canceling Fall Regional and State Championship events.

Our new registration date for Fall 2020 sports on Family ID will now be Aug. 24. This will be for all levels - modified, junior varsity and varsity.

Please know that we expect further guidance from the Governor's Office during the first week in August.

Philosophy of Interscholastic Athletics

The interscholastic athletic program at Pawling Central Schools is an integral part of the educational program of the District.  The benefits of a comprehensive athletic program provide not only member athletes, but all students, staff, parents and community members’ opportunities for school/community interaction, the development of an involved, active citizenry, building school pride and increased interest and involvement in all school activities.

The philosophy of the Pawling Central School District Athletic Department supports the development of students who are well rounded, productive and contributing members of our community and a democratic society in general.

The experiences gained through team competition in interscholastic athletics provide student/athletes learning opportunities that are complimentary to those learned in the classroom and yet are recognized as unique.  These equally important lessons provide completeness to the development of the individual and the entire learning community that cannot be attained in the classroom alone.  Students who choose to participate in interscholastic athletics are exposed to opportunities that further develop social, emotional and athletic skills.  Student-Athletes at the interscholastic level are taught to dismiss the concept of entitlement and learn the value of earned play time.  Furthermore, students develop a sense of team work, sportsmanship, self-discipline, dedication, hard work, and respect in addition to a lifestyle promoting physical health and wellness.

It is the goal of the Pawling Central School District Athletic Department to work in partnership with student-athletes, families, and the many community groups to experience quality, productive and enjoyable athletic opportunities.

Important Fall 2020 Dates

Due to COVID-19, the status of interscholastic athletics this fall is still undetermined.

Registration through FamilyID for a fall sport will not be available until there is clarification on if, and when, a fall season will take place.  The original date set by NYSPHSAA for Varsity and JV sports to begin is August 24.   We expect to learn more about that timeline in the next few weeks.

As more information becomes available we will be sure to communicate with our community, athletes, parents and coaches.  Stay safe

Athletic Placement Process for Inter-School Athletic Programs

THE INTENT OF THE APP IS TO PROVIDE A PROTOCOL FOR THOSE DISTRICTS THAT CHOOSE TO ALLOW STUDENTS IN GRADES 7 AND 8 TO MOVE UP; OR FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 9-12 TO MOVE DOWN, ALLOWING THEM TO PARTICIPATE SAFELY AT AN APPROPRIATE LEVEL OF COMPETITION BASED UPON PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL READINESS AND ATHLETIC ABILITY RATHER THAN AGE AND GRADE ALONE.

GUIDELINES FOR MIXED COMPETITION ON INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC TEAMS

These guidelines are issued to assist schools in the implementation of Section 135.4(c)(7)(ii)(c) of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education which govern interscholastic competition involving members of both sexes on a single school team. The following general information should be noted by the school personnel who are responsible for the implementation of the Regulations: ? The purpose of the regulation is to preserve the health and safety of students while assuring that students of both sexes have opportunity to participate successfully in interschool competition. Athletic opportunity in mixed competition is allowed under the conditions set forth in the regulations for specific sports identified in subclause (2) of section 135.4(c)(7)(ii)(c), as well as all other sports not so identified. ? The regulation provides for students involved in mixed competition to be placed on teams at appropriate levels of competition based upon the individual’s medical history, maturity, physical data, fitness scores and skills. The guidelines are to be used for both junior high school and senior high school programs.
