Stone Soup Community Fest - 2/7/2025

Enjoy an evening of fun workshops!

Date: Friday, February 7th 6:00-8:30 pm

Location: Pawling Middle School

6:00 Check In

6:15 to 7:00 1st workshop        

7:15 to 8:00 2nd workshop

At the conclusion of the workshops, at  8:00pm we will once again gather in the cafetorium to enjoy our Stone Soup together. This year's soup will be Chicken Rice. In addition, Camille Ludington will be reading The Legend of Stone Soup as the story is brought to life with the help of local children. 

To share in the tradition of the legend of Stone Soup, please bring a non perishable food item to Pawling Middle School which will be donated  to the Pawling Resource Center.

Register for TWO 45 minute workshops. Unless indicated children under 14 must be partnered with an adult during the workshops, a great opportunity for family members to explore an interest together.     

Please register early as sessions for some workshops have limited seating.  We'll also need time to gather the needed supplies for some of the workshops. 

 

Stone Soup Workshop Descriptions 2025

Unless noted, workshops do require children under the age of 14 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian in the individual workshop room. The event is intended to provide a bonding experience over shared interests.

We will have bilingual high school student translators available to accompany families who would would like assistance with Spanish translation

 

Clay Making Workshop - Limited Seating - Sign up early  THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL  - PLEASE CHOOSE A DIFFERENT WORKSHOP - only space for 12 participants per session Fee $2.00 Suitable for all ages. 

Host: Cherie Ingraham - Clay is a way back to nature. In this clay making workshop sponsored by The Chuckie Goodnight Foundation for The Environment, you'll be creating The Pileated Woodpecker that will be surprisingly realistic. No experience necessary.

        

 

Cupcake Decoration - Suitable for all ages - Supply Fee: $3.00  

Hosts: Pawling Middle School Band Teacher & Cupcake Queen: Mrs. Nace, assisted by our wonderful 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. Dolan

You can learn how to make beautiful and fun cupcakes. Mrs. Nace will be using a beach theme this year. She will be demonstrating how to make a Bear at the Beach cupcake and a Beach Crab cupcake! This year we need to ask each participant to bring a can of vanilla icing as well as a small spoon. Siblings can share the same can of icing. Each participant will be able to design two cupcakes; one of each design.   

  

 

Create a Creature Lab All ages, but big enough to wield a marker with intent - No fee THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL  - PLEASE CHOOSE A DIFFERENT WORKSHOP
Host: Rachel Seitz – Customize a pillow creature with markers, yarn, ribbon and stickers. The host will be using a hot glue gun and a sewing machine. Make yours pretty, ugly, funny, weird, all of the above or whatever!

  

DIY Bracelet Making Ages: 6 years and up   Supply Fee: $4.00

Host: Bella Franco  - In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the basics of bracelet design, including how to use beads, threads, and clasps to create personalized bracelets. Whether it's simple beaded designs or more intricate patterns, attendees will leave with unique, custom-made accessories.

  

 

Felting Class New This Year! Suitable for all ages.  Fee: $4 per person

Host: Crystal Walters - Description: Participants will learn the technique of wet felting with wool to create a design of their choice. They can make a phone holder, pencil pouch or coin purse.

  

 

Glow In The Dark Slime DIY THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL  - PLEASE CHOOSE A DIFFERENT WORKSHOP  Age range: 4 and up No fee  Limited Seating - Sign up early  - only space for 12 participants per session  New slime recipe! 

Hosts: Neena McBear & Maureen Meltzer-McGrath, Children's Program Coordinators - Pawling Free Library

Slime is squishy and fun! We’ll learn to make Glow In The Dark Slime. 4-5 year olds may benefit from caregiver assistance.  Smocks will be provided but participants should be comfortable with mess.  

  

 

Karate: Bushido MMA   (Ages: 6 – 11)  No fee

Interactive demonstration in which kids will participate in learning basic martial arts.

All participants should wear t-shirt and sweatpants. Necessary equipment will be provided.

 

  

Knitting Clinic - Suitable for all ages, no fee                   

Hosts: Caroline Bennett - Get help with your own project, learn new techniques, or simply learn the basics of knitting. Bring your own needles if you have them, yarn is available. We also have some donated needles.

  

  

Lego Mania Suitable for all ages.      

Host: David Roberts - Got Legos?  Bring your spare bricks. We’ll make new things, create new worlds, explore new territories, and build new empires. If anyone not attending the workshop would like to donate some of their old Legos, this group will put them to good use! 

  

 

Make Your Own Rain Stick - A Latin American Percussion Instrument Ages 8 and Up Materials Fee: $3.00

Host: Brianne Chasanoff - In many cultures, summoning rain often included the use of musical instruments. One well-known example is a rain stick, an instrument that mimics the sound of rain. In this workshop, you will be given the tools and materials needed to make your very own Rain Stick that sounds very realistic! You will also be given the opportunity to decorate it and take your creation home!

  

Marshmallow Creations Ages 5 & up, Supply Fee: $2.00  (SORRY, BUT THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL)

Host: Pawling Boy Scout Troop 34 This is a fun craft using toothpicks and marshmallows. The children can build different creations from animals to cars, trucks or even buildings using marshmallows and toothpicks.

   

 

  

 Theater Workshop Students in grades 1 - 8, no fee

Hosts: PHS Drama Club Members invite you to play theater games with us! Have fun acting and becoming characters in our Theater Workshop.  

  

  

The Legend of Stone Soup Brought To Life With Children - Suitable for ages 5 – 12. Session 2 Only

Host: Camille Ludington - Several local student actors and actresses will be portraying the characters in the book as Mrs. Ludington reads the story to all the Community Fest participants as they enjoy their soup at 8pm. We'll need some  children to portray the townspeople in the story. Parents do not need to be present in the workshop room for this workshop, but are welcome if they'd like to attend. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Treasures from the Beach Art – Ages 2nd grade and up. Materials Fee: $3.00           

Host: Mariah Warren - Learn how to turn beach-found treasures into inspiring art for your home or for gifts. Using tumbled glass, stones, and even wood, participants will turn found objects into keepsakes to cherish. PLEASE NOTE: Participants will be working with adhesive, so should wear clothing that they don’t mind getting dirty. If you have any beach glass or flat, thin stones you would like to incorporate into your project, feel free to bring them with you.

  

Yoga Suitable for all ages.

Host:  Julia Harrer will lead you in a short, 10-15 minute, traditional practice, incorporating surya namaskar (sun salutation) with a game or two to make it interesting and applicable off of the “mat”. Come connect with mind, body and spirit, along with community in a fun and lively atmosphere. Bring a mat if you have one. We’ll be able to provide one if you don’t.

    

  

At 8:00pm you are invited to join us in the cafetorium for a cup of Stone Soup (this year we'll be serving Chicken Rice) as Camille Ludington reads Marcia Brown's The Legend of Stone Soup. The story will also be brought to life on the stage by local children.
